Hello Eric and Rachel.
I just installed 700-800 sq ft. of natural oak parquet flooring. Pretty generic stuff from Home Depot. on sale for 1.29 per Sq. Same situation, tight budget. But like the look of wood.

Will it hold up??? Well it depends on you definition... and I guess how many kids you have!
not to mention animals.

It will get scratched up regardless of how careful you are. Before I was finished laying the floor. I noticed areas where our dog was slipping around... scratches!!!
Not gouges, just surface scratches.

As far as the muddy boots are concerned, the dirt can be cleaned up easily enough. But be careful with the water content of that mud.

Parquet is similar to plank floors in that they are both wood. Planks are thicker and more durable. When they get too bad, you can re-finish them. Wheras parquet is just small pieces of wood banded together to make bigger ones, and are thinner. Therefor not much opportunity to re-finish?

Suggestions:
1) preferrably do not install in kitchen. too much opportunity for large liquid spills. (water and wood don't get along)
2)Place rugs in high traffic areas, ie..entries and halls to take the load.

And something else we noticed.. your house will get colder. Or at least ours did, as we have a direct glue down to the concrete sub floor??

If you have any more questions....
