: I'm putting Pergo in my kitchen, and I'm not sure how to go about curing several dips in the existing vinyl floor (my plan is to put the Pergo on top of the vinyl). The dips are not too bad. There several gradual ones that are maybe 5 feet across at their widest and 1/4" deep at their deepest. But there are also a few near the various doorways to the kitchen that drop off rapidly (about 1/4" in the last foot as you approach the doorways). Pergo recommends using a floor leveling compound to make existing floors flat enough to do a good install. But I'm wondering if these defects might be better cured with some kind of underlayment. If I do use a floor leveling compound, how do I create dams to keep the compound confined to the kitchen when filling in areas adjacent to the edges? I'd appreciate any help I can get!
i WOULD USE aRDEX fEATHER fINISH FLOOR LEVELING COMPUND ..
You may want to use a straight board and SCREED over the high spots to fill in the low spots. and at the edges, mix the ardex consistency thicker so it will not level itself out and there will be no need for a DAM. The tools you will need are ardex feather finish patch, a 20" concrete finishing trowel, a 6" drwall taping knife or "spat", bucket of water, rags.
Simply clean up any beads or ridges so there are no lumps ... make everything smooth as possible, scrape all excess residue when dry.
Laminate wood floor preparation does not have to be perfect, only no high spots nor low ones.
