I am a homebuilder with a fussy customer. This is the heating season and prior to the final coating on a new maple floor the floor shrunk slightly. The gaps themselves are well within standards but here is my question.
The final coat of varnish has flowed slightly unevenly over the edges where there is shrinkage. If you look along a particluar slightly open joint the varnish may have filled the slightly open joint for a certain distance and then the next slight distance along the joint may be more open without having been filled. The buyer of my spec house is complaing that he is buying a new house and shouldn't have to accept this. Wants me to spend $10,000 ripping out the wood and redo it from scratch.
Need a quick resonse as to what the industry standard may say about this condition. Please use email as I do not monitor this board. Thanks.
