Terrazo questions

Hello:

I've looked through the last 12 months postings and found some helpful info on terrazo but I still have a few questions.
We've got the carpet tack strips and we're pulling them up and cutting the nails flush with the floor. However, someone before us removed other strips and popped the nails out so we have the big gouges along the edge as well. I need to patch these. I read that certain things can be used but it will depend on the type of terrazo, the "old" or "new" style.
I'd really like to be able to do this ourselves. We're on a tight budget and are willing to do what we have to do.
1) The terrazo is the old type, cement with the chips mixed in. What would be the proper ingredients to patch this? What should we steer clear of?
2) In the few areas that the carpet padding seems to have become one with the terrazo, is there a glue stripper, etc., that we could use that will not harm the terrazo. I know we have to refinish it, I just don't want to cause damage to it.
3) Are we fooling ourselves that this is something we'll be able to do and have it look decent after we're done?

Thanks in advance!
Beth/Miami
