FlooringInstaller.com News Release

IFLOOR.COM HIRES ONLINE MANAGER FOR FLOORINGINSTALLER.COM

Bellevue, March 21, 2000: iFloor.com, the Internet's floor store, has hired Dave Spreen to be the manager of their new FLOORINGINSTALLER.COM web site. Steve Simonson, president of iFloor.com said, "With 20 years in the trade, including the last 13 years as a branch manager and 2 years as web master for wholesaler Tom Duffy Company, Mr. Spreen has just the right mix of 'in the trenches' experience combined with Internet savvy and vision that we were looking for to make this site a valuable resource for everyone in the flooring industry."

FLOORINGINSTALLER.com will serve as a matching service for customers of all kinds who may be seeking a qualified flooring installer. Additionally the site is intended to provide all qualified flooring installers a free web page of their own. Once a comprehensive list of qualified Installers is collected the information will be available to the public at no charge. If customers use a listed installer they will be able to rate the installer on 10 key criteria after the job is completed.

New manager Dave Spreen said, "Besides the obvious elements like free installer listings, solid content, new product reviews, educational event calendars, general forums linking consumer to installer and specialized boards for installers only, annotated links to industry related sites, chat rooms and search features, I envision online streaming installation clinics by industry reps and experts, creative mechanisms to link installers with online projects, and eventually an online situation comedy based on the antics in a typical workroom. Seriously, FLOORINGINSTALLER.COM will compliment and support everything already out there. What a great opportunity for me to serve the installation community that has served me so well over the years. I am really looking forward to working with the iFloor.com team!"

iFloor.com is the leading floor covering site online and will support and promote the new flooring installer web site aggressively this year. Mr. Spreen is well known in the industry for his "Floor Coverings in Cyberspace" articles, chats and presentations.

Steve Simonson and Dave Spreen are available for interview appointments via the numbers shown below.

Report from Surfaces 2000 by Dave Spreen (note: this was originally written for Floors in Africa magazine - Dave)

The annual Surfaces trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada (US) Jan. 25-28, 2000 was the largest since being founded in 1990. Some 775 companies exhibited products and over 34,000 attendees had preregistered for the show. Total gross space on the two floors of the Sands Expo is about 1.2 million sq. ft. (yes, we crazy americans still measure in square feet!) with almost half of that occupied by display booths.

Several things have contributed to the show's growth this year. The big 3 US carpet manufacturers: Shaw, Beaulieu, and Mohawk are all participating after varying degrees of committment the last few years. Rug maker Nourison returned in a big way too, showing some 35 collections within a 20 x150 ft. booth. Of course, acquisition and consolidation have positioned the big 3 US firms in all segments of the industry. Shaw introduced its new hardwood line this year. Beauleau just acquired LD Brinkman, the largest wholesale distributor in the US.

Several new products and finishes were introduced at the show. Sinak Corp. introduced its new calcium chloride concrete moisture test kit. The product features a patented hard plastic reuseable dome with a thick rubber seal and heavy donut shaped weight to anchor it down. Even the petrie dish is reuseable, so a user only needs buy pre-measured packets of calcium chloride crystals for about $3(US) each. Kits retail for about $60(US).

Plastic laminates continue to gain market share in the US. The anticipated shake-out has not yet materialized. Mannington introduced its new "iCORE" line featuring a waterproof extruded synthetic core, sound dampening chambers, and a no-glue snap together installation procedure. In the sheet vinyl arena, Armstrong introduced its newly patented, highly touted "ToughGuard" finish technology. For ceramics, I nearly got lost in the myriad of booths coordinated via the Tile-of-Spain 4000 sq. ft. exhibit!

A few exhibitors attracted attention with various forms of entertainment. The show itself features a national installation contest. These twenty mechanics (artists really) are the creme of the crop having survived eight regional contests. Domco Tarkett set up a huge hardwood half circle upward curved stage on which champion skate boarders and bicyclists performed amazing stunts. Award Hardwoods featured a small stage where tap dancers beat the heck out of their product's "ceramic finish" surface, but showing no signs of damage from the pounding. One clever exhibitor hired a trick-shot pool player to drawn people to their booth.

Several new flooring industry entrepreneurs revealed new Internet services and business models at their booths. VFloor and The Floor Space offer website design and hosting services catered to flooring retailers. Thinkfloors, Comprehensive Search and The Construction-Zone are targeting the business-to-business market of the industry. Also ran into a few ecommerce visionaries strolling about the floor and discretely making connections. I think its a fun time to be in the industry and I predict an interesting year ahead.

The sponsor of Surfaces, the World Floor Covering Association(WFCA), has nearly finalized a deal to sell the Surfaces trade show to a company named Hanley-Wood for $40 million (US). Hanley-Wood is experienced in trade show management, markets 26 trade publications and is owned by parent company Veronis, Suhler & Associates, a large merchant banking firm headquartered in New York. The WFCA will be able to focus on its strengths as an association while Hanley-Wood continues to "grow the show" via its prowess. Many see this as a win-win situation for all of us in an industry almost as old as dirt, but only time will tell of course.

This concludes my report on the Surfaces show for this year. So, from your new correspondent in the States, hope to see you all at the bigger than ever Surfaces 2001 show next January in Las Vegas!

Update August 8, 2000: Floor Coverings 2000 in Beijing Exhibitor List and Seminar Schedule.

It may help to know that the Exhibitor's Manual, in English, is a very thorough document of 26 pages and useful forms. All the specs on moving in and out, visa invitation letter, translation of promotional material services, official stand, freight and travel agent, etc. The trade climate with China seems to be warming. Despite political controversies, could be good timing for US companies to take a look, or a second look, as the case may be. -Dave Spreen

Press release: Flooring Coverings 2000 in Beijing Draws International Crowd

Oct. 27, Kneeland, CA - Floor Coverings 2000, the First China International Floor Coverings and Carpet Fair, drew 82 exhibitors from China, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Korea, Norway, Spain, Taiwan, and the United States. The event was sponsored by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the China International Exhibition Corporation (CIEC) and the Chinese Flooring Committee. Additional support is provided by the Association of Architecture Decoration of China, China Stone Material Industry Association, China Building Sanitary Ceramics Association, and the Beijing Carpet Association.

The 4-day event, held Sept. 12-15, 2000, attracted almost 6,000 buyers to see a wide range of flooring products displayed in the 4,400 sq. meters of Building 8B in the China International Exhibition Centre in Beijing. Laid out in typical trade show fashion including red carpet in the aisles, the big players commanded large floor space and strategic locations, but niche companies had some unique offerings as well in the exhibition.

The show was dominated by 16 pre-finished hardwood (20%) and 30 laminate (37%) exhibitors, of which about one-third are based in European and other foreign countries. Chinese or Belgium carpets were represented in 5 booths (6%). There were 4 bamboo flooring and 11 publication and Internet services exhibitors. Stone, vinyl tile, adhesive, tool, sundry, equipment, trading, and consulting firms rounded out the offerings.

Attendees were categorized and counted by the CIEC as: manufacturer/producer, 1,244 (21.4%); distributor/dealer/wholesaler, 924 (15.9%); importer/exporter, 203 (3.5%); interior design, 1,575 (27.1%); architecture, 320 (5.5%); retailer/home improvement center, 895 (15.4%); contractor/installer, 453 (7.8%); others, 198 (3.4%).

Business and technical seminars were held in the nearby Radisson SAS hotel. Session topics included a discussion of the views of foreign buyers of Chinese flooring products, a presentation on the technology and machinery of laminate flooring, a workshop on DYNO adhesive and its use in flooring, and an ecommerce roundtable with an international panel.

Expenditures for home furnishings in China are growing 33% annually from only 10 billion RMB ($1.17 billion US) in the early 1990s to an estimate of over 200 billion RMB ($23.5 billion US) in 2000. Some 2900 million sq. meters of new construction is planned. The growth rate of modernization in the commercial sector is just as impressive. Office buildings, sport and cultural buildings, and trade centers are being built on a large scale. It is estimated that one out of every four construction cranes operating in the world today is in Shanghai alone!

Originally planned as an event to be held every other year, due to this year's success, show manager Samuel Miao of the CIEC has announced the exhibition will be organized annually and that Floor Coverings 2001 will be held in Beijing in September next year.

Press release: Flooring Coverings Exhibition in Beijing Continues to Grow

Oct. 29, 2001 (Kneeland, CA) - Floor Coverings 2001, the second China International Floor Coverings and Carpet Fair, drew 131 exhibitors from China, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Korea, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United States and other countries.
